The Greenhill Arsenic Smelter
The Greenhill Arsenic Smelter (Gunnislake, Cornwall, UK)
The production of arsenic was widespread in Cornwall during the centuries. Ore that contained arsenic was very common in Cornwall. Often, the Cornish mines had their own arsenic works on site. The Gunnislake region once produced half of the world’s needs of this very poisonous metal. Where once more than 100 people were employed, there is now peace and silence, probably due to the contamination of this area. Almost nothing has survived the ravages of time and much of this important economic and industrial heritage risks being forgotten forever.
This document describes the history, the arsenic production and the mineralogical residues of one of the largest chemical refining plants that existed in this region in previous centuries.
